Portable wood stoves are very hardy creatures and do not require much maintenance, but some key areas need to be addressed to ensure that your stove is ready for the first combustion and ready for the upcoming season.
Once you run out of your wood stove, clean and repair your winter hot tent.
Materials required: Wire brush/brush
1) Overall inspection of the stove
Check the furnace box, legs, doors, damping devices, and stovepipe for holes, deformation, or areas of excessive rust. Since the stove is made of carbon steel, a certain amount of rust is acceptable and inevitable, which has no impact on the performance and function of the stove.
2) Wire brush your false bottom
Brush off rust, ashes, or other residues on the false bottom to prevent accumulation throughout the season and ensure that all pores are unobstructed.
3) Remove excess rust on the furnace box with a wire brush.
You don't need to be too special - the focus here is to prevent rust. Your stove won't look bright and new until it burns for the first time. After a trip, the stove will look 40 years old - that's normal.
4) The rotation around the top of the folding leg and the position where the leg contacts the stove box during folding shall be lined and any rust or corrosion shall be removed.
This is very important. Failure to maintain this area of the furnace may cause the legs to get stuck and rust - prying them open may deform/damage the legs and the stove box.
5) The top of the folding leg is oiled where it rotates, and the place where the leg contacts the stove box when folding.
We like knife & ax blade oil because it is not based on oil (plant), and it can penetrate, and you don't have to worry about the toxic smoke generated when burning.
6) Clean and oil the door hinge with a wire brush
Smaller wire brushes can be used to clean gaps.
Oil the hinge after cleaning.
7) Remove all pipe sections of creosote.
The creosote should be knocked off, and the pipe section is used to scrape the creosote that may accumulate after each combustion from the larger pipe section.
As part of the annual maintenance, "deep cleaning" of creosote with a wire brush will make the seasonal removal of creosote faster, easier, and more effective.
8) Correct the deformation of the connecting section of the bellows to ensure the correct fit of the pipe section.
The pipe end may be impacted and deformed during transportation or when prying off parts. Good pipe coordination can ensure good airflow and ensure safety in the tent when operating the stove.
