Why Is There A Lot Of Water Outside the Tent The next day? -Condensation Phenomenon - Pomoly Xian - 04-13-2022

The principle of condensation:

The temperature in the tent is high, the temperature of the tent wall is low, and the water vapor in the tent condenses on the tent wall. To put it simply, in a cold environment, whether it is a single layer or one with internal and external tents, the problem of condensation is unavoidable.

Causes of condensation in tents:

Taking sleep as an example, the water vapor evaporated from the body and the water vapor exhaled from the mouth are very different. Water vapor can be penetrated by the coated fabric with breathable function, and the exhalation from the mouth starts with water vapor. Due to the relatively large exhalation volume, it becomes water vapor when the mouth is cold. It is already tiny water droplets, which is larger than the breathable coating. The layered fabric is microporous and rarely penetrates. Therefore, the more people living in the tent, the more condensation water will be formed. The production of condensed water also has a great relationship with the humidity of the air. The more humid the environment, the more condensed water will be produced.
Taking the tent itself as an example, due to cost reasons, most tent fabrics are low-cost PU coatings, which are not breathable and will definitely condense. If you use breathable material, the cost is amazing, and the price of the product will be much higher!

There are many ways to avoid it:

Tent condensation is caused by the moist air exhaled from the tent user encountering the cooler temperature inside the tent.
While you can't completely stop condensation from happening, there are a few things you can do to reduce it, including:

1. Do not pitch tents in the lower part of the camping area, because there is often cooler air in the air, keep the tent walls warm and condensation will be reduced.
2. Avoid camping in places with high humidity, such as near marshes and wet swamps, ponds, lakes or streams.
Camping near a body of water, the air is humid, and the temperature changes produce a lot of condensation.
3. Keep the humidity inside the tent low, consistent with the outside of the tent, which means cooking, tea and boiling water are placed outside.
4. Before entering the tent at the end of the day, take off wet shoes and clothes and let them dry outside.
Failing that, you should tuck them into a bag.
5. Make sure that the moist air you exhale from your own breath can be expelled from the tent through the tent's windows or other apertures.
Anything you can do to help your tent achieve better ventilation will reduce condensation formation.

Solutions for tents soaked by condensation:

If you wake up to find your tent is soaking wet, then you need a little time to let the tent dry in the sun.
If you're in a hurry, you should make sure to use a dry towel to wipe the tent surface off of any water droplets, which will help reduce the moisture considerably.
